Naturopathic Medicine

In 2001, I became the first licensed naturopathic doctor to practise in Saskatoon. Naturopathic medicine is a distinct profession of primary health care that integrates conventional clinical medicine and diagnostics with functional pathology and a broad range of natural therapies including therapeutic lifestyle change, mind/body therapies, nutritional and herbal medicines.

With over a decade of experience, I combine the science of biomedicine with wisdom of naturopathy for a health care plan that is both personalized and effective.

I am passionate about learning and I consider myself a bit of a geek in keeping up on the latest in research and innovations in naturopathic and integrative medicine. I have an affinity to the mystery solving aspect of medicine. I consider your health concerns to be my personal challenge, to seek and understand what your body’s many symptoms are trying to communicate. In this endless pursuit of knowledge, I have also studied Mind/Body medicine at Harvard Medical School, as well as Environmental Medicine with the renowned expert, Dr. Walter Crimmon. I am also studying to be a Certified Food and Spirit practitioner.
Our health needs are as unique as our own fingerprints. They are influenced by our genetics, physical and social environment, beliefs and every experience we’ve ever had. My approach looks at the totality of these influences as well as the body as a whole in order to get to the root causes of your health concerns and most importantly to provide a plan of how to improve your wellness.

I also acknowledge and respect that we each have different paths to wellness – sometimes it takes a detour and/or a few tries to reach your optimal health – I am prepared to meet you where you are and together we can facilitate a personalized plan that fits you and your lifestyle.

It is said a healer must go through their own journey in order to provide the greatest insight. I have experienced firsthand the healing power of naturopathic medicine. Like you, I am also on my own healing journey. I have seen personally, as well as a mom, if you fix your gut and optimize your nutrition, your whole life can change.

Frequently Asked Questions

Naturopathic medicine is a unique and comprehensive approach to improving health and treating illness. Focusing on prevention and using natural substances and treatments, naturopathic doctors (NDs) support and stimulate the body’s ability to heal itself.

The primary goal is to address the cause of illness, rather than simply treat or suppress the symptoms. The patient is seen as a whole person and the ND takes the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual dimensions into account when diagnosing and developing a treatment plan.

Virtually all chronic and most acute conditions may benefit from treatment by naturopathic doctors. People of all ages can be helped.
Like a conventional doctor, dentist or chiropractor, naturopathic doctors must first complete pre-medical studies at university. A four year, full-time program in naturopathic medicine is then completed at an accredited naturopathic college. The first two years of study focus on basic medical sciences and diagnosis. The last two years concentrate on naturopathic principles and therapeutics, including extensive clinical practice in a supervised teaching clinic. To become licensed two sets of standardized NPLEX exams must be passed. Naturopathic doctors must take ongoing continuing educational courses to maintain their licenses.
At this time, naturopathic medicine is not covered by Saskatchewan Health, but the majority of extended health care plans include naturopathic medicine. Insured patients should contact their employer or insurance agent to see whether they are covered and for what amount.
